Last year I read an article about the Clever car, a 3-wheeled car that allows it to tilt the front half of the vehicle, but is built for urban environments (where you won’t be traveling much faster than 35 MPH). It totally psyched me out, because I would love to have such a vehicle for my day-to-day usage. However, because I drive on US highways and roads (typically in the suburbs and rural areas) my commute exceeds the maximum speed of the Clever, so I’d never really be able to use it (besides, its not generally available yet).
Yesterday I was reading about the VentureOne (via DailyTech) that will be making its way into the US market in July ‘08. The VentureOne looks very similar to the Clever, but stands out with its ability to go faster – much faster. The Q100 version will have a top speed of 120+ MPH, which is entirely useless in our Autobahn-lacking highways.
One of my favorite (subtle) features:
As a result of the testing, the company is confident that a 3.0 kWh power reserve is sufficient and would allow for a 20 mile “EV only” range.
Wow! So you could run out of gas and still be able to make it to a station.
The e50 will be starting at around $18,000 and will have a range of ~350 miles, but will only have a top speed of 100 MPH. I honestly would rather have a slightly better range and take the 20 MPH loss anyway, because unless I move to Germany, I will never need a top speed greater than 80 MPH…
